What Pool Water Testing Actually Measures
Strip tests and basic home kits measure chlorine and pH — two of the six parameters that define water balance. A professional full-panel test covers free chlorine, combined chlorine (chloramines), pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid (stabilizer). Each of these values influences the others, and a reading that appears acceptable in isolation can mask an imbalance when the full picture is examined.
Total alkalinity acts as a pH buffer — when it falls too low, pH becomes volatile and swings unpredictably with each rain event or heavy bather load. Calcium hardness at the wrong level causes either scaling on surfaces and equipment or corrosive water that attacks plaster and metal fittings. Cyanuric acid stabilizes chlorine against UV degradation but, when it accumulates beyond effective levels, it reduces chlorine's sanitizing capacity to the point where pathogen control is compromised even with normal chlorine readings.
