Why Hot Tub Water Chemistry Is More Demanding Than Pool Chemistry
A typical residential hot tub holds 300 to 500 gallons of water. A typical residential pool holds 15,000 to 25,000 gallons. This 40-to-1 volume difference means that a single bather session in a hot tub has a proportionally much greater impact on water chemistry than the same session in a pool. The oils, lotions, sweat, and organic compounds introduced by bathers are diluted across a much smaller volume of water, and they must be addressed by the sanitizer system with far less buffer capacity.
Temperature compounds this effect significantly. Hot water at 100–104°F accelerates every chemical reaction in the water — sanitizer is consumed faster, pH drifts more rapidly, and the conditions that support microbial growth are more favorable than in cooler pool water. A hot tub that is adequately sanitized at 10 pm may have substantially lower sanitizer residual by morning if heavily used. Foaming — caused by surfactants from personal care products — is an early indicator that the organic load in the water has exceeded what the sanitizer can manage effectively.
