Heater Types for Boston Pools
Three heater technologies are practical for Greater Boston residential pools: natural gas (or propane) heaters, heat pump heaters, and solar heating systems. Each has a different cost profile, performance characteristic, and installation requirement. The best choice depends on how you use your pool, what your current equipment pad infrastructure supports, and how you weigh installation cost against operating cost.
Gas heaters heat water quickly regardless of ambient air temperature — they can raise pool temperature by 1–2°F per hour in a typical residential pool. This makes them the preferred choice for pools that are heated on demand rather than continuously: vacation homes, pools that are used irregularly, or pools where owners want the ability to raise the temperature quickly for a specific event. The operating cost is higher than a heat pump at equivalent usage, but the heater itself is less expensive to purchase and install, and performance does not degrade in cool weather.
