How Pool Pumps Fail
Pool pump failures typically present in one of four ways: the pump does not start, the pump runs but produces little or no flow, the pump leaks water, or the pump runs but makes abnormal noise. Each symptom points toward a distinct set of potential causes, and correct diagnosis before ordering parts or scheduling replacement is essential to avoid unnecessary cost.
A pump that does not start is most commonly a capacitor failure, a seized motor bearing, or an electrical supply issue. Capacitors are relatively inexpensive and straightforward to replace; seized bearings indicate a motor that has reached end of life. Electrical issues — tripped breakers, failed timers, or wiring faults — require electrical diagnostics before the pump itself is assumed to be at fault.
