Shock Treatment as a Corrective Measure, Not a Substitute for Maintenance
Pool shock refers to the process of applying a large, concentrated dose of oxidizing agent — typically calcium hypochlorite, sodium dichloro, or a non-chlorine shock compound — to break down organic contaminants and destroy algae cells that have established themselves in the water or on pool surfaces. It is a corrective intervention, not a substitute for regular chemistry management.
Shocking a pool that has already experienced a significant algae bloom requires more product, more time, and more follow-up work than shock applied as a routine oxidation step during balanced maintenance. A pool with visible green algae on the walls and floor has a biological load that demands multiple treatment rounds, physical brushing of surfaces to dislodge algae colonies, extended filter run times, and follow-up water testing to confirm the water has cleared and chemistry has stabilized before swimmers return.
