What Can Go Wrong Over a Boston Winter
A properly closed pool is protected against the most severe winter damage risks, but a closed pool is not a static system. Several categories of problems can develop over the five to six month closed season that are not caused by inadequate closing work but by events that occur after the pool is sealed for winter.
Cover failures are the most common mid-winter issue. A mesh safety cover that develops a strap failure, a damaged spring, or a shifted anchor position under heavy snow load may sag into the pool water, creating a safety hazard and allowing debris to enter the pool through the gap. Solid covers can develop tears or seam failures under ice and snow weight, or can freeze to the pool coping when water accumulates on the cover surface and refreezes. A cover that is visibly compromised in January is a problem that is best addressed in January — not discovered at spring opening when the damage to the pool water is already done.
